AHEAD Organization

AHEAD is a pioneer in delivering Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in Afghanistan. We have a proud history of delivering WASH services to millions of Afghans and saving hundreds of thousands of lives across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan since our establishment in 2008.

Access to clean drinking water, toilets, and good hygiene is a basic human right that every Afghan citizen deserves to enjoy. Unfortunately, over 60% of the Afghanistan population doesn’t have access to either clean drinking water, toilets or good hygiene, which makes the residents of this country most vulnerable to some severe diseases that could be easily prevented.

Diarrhea is one of the leading diseases that cause the death of a significant number of children across the country after acute respiratory infections. Infectious diseases like diarrhea are not only killing our kids but it takes the lives of thousands of our loved ones every year.

Our work in the Water area focuses on ensuring that families have access to clean drinking water through the creation of improved drinking water sources that are protected from outside contamination. We work very closely with communities and ensure that each community fully owns and effectively the new water source after its establishment.

Maintaining a good Sanitation system is key to preventing diseases. Open defecation is a major promoter of infection diseases in Afghanistan that takes thousands of innocent lives each year. AHEAD is proud to have constructed thousands of toilets across all parts of Afghanistan. We ensure that people have access to basic toilets so that human waste is properly covered and away from public visibility and human contact.

Hygiene promotion makes a core component of our WASH work. Our work in this area is aimed at promoting good hygiene practices, especially handwashing with soap and disinfecting personal belongings after they are exposed to viruses or bacteria. Our hygiene experts work communities, school students, universities, health professionals, community leaders, and religious leaders in promoting hygiene which is crucial for preventing diseases and improving the overall health and wellbeing of citizens.

Access to clean drinking Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene is also directly linked to the economy of the communities and individual families. Communities with inadequate access to WASH are also facing severe livelihood, education, and food security challenges. Women are particularly affected this challenge, they are feeling the challenge every minute of their lives on a daily basis.

AHEAD’s mission of combatting poverty is mostly addressed through promoting gender-sensitive WASH support to communities. We believe access to clean water, better sanitation, and improved hygiene is key to ending poverty in the longer-term future.
